About Dr Steve Walton

I’m Dr Steve Walton, an NHS GP partner at Stonecroft Medical Centre in Sheffield. I qualified MB ChB from the University of Sheffield in 1995 and have been a partner at Stonecroft since 2002.

HGV medicals since 2002

I started doing HGV medicals in 2002, as an evening clinic once the NHS surgery had closed. I’m now close to completing my 1,000th driver medical examination.

More than a tick-box exercise

I see the five-yearly medical as a chance for a proper overall health check, not just a form to tick for the DVLA. It’s also a relationship, especially with drivers who come back to me every year once they’re over 65.

The medical is good preventive healthcare, and it gives us time to talk about anything else that’s been bothering you. Lots of people are a bit on edge at their medical, so I’ll often check your blood pressure more than once to get a true reading. If something comes up that needs looking into, I’ll usually suggest you discuss it with your own GP.

Every appointment is a full 30-minute examination in a proper CQC registered medical centre.

Outside the surgery

I’m a father of three boys, and when I’m not at work you’ll usually find me mountain biking, running or skiing.
