D4 Medical Examination

D4 medicalThe DVLA’s mandatory examination includes an assessment of vision.

This will include acuity with and without visual aids.

The acuity threshold was tightened in March 2013 so that at least one eye must be able to complete the 6/7.5 line.

Any glasses worn for driving need to be assessed, whether or not they are necessary.
Ideally the glasses prescription should be brought to the examination.

The D4 examination is needed:

  • On application for a class C provisional and is submitted with the D2 form.
  • Every 5 years from age 45
  • Annually from age 65.

The same examination applies to PSV drivers as for HGV.
