The DVLA’s mandatory examination includes an assessment of vision.
This will include acuity with and without visual aids.
Lorry and bus drivers need at least 6/7.5 in the better eye and 6/60 in the worse eye, with glasses (max +8 dioptres) or contact lenses if needed.
Any glasses worn for driving need to be assessed, whether or not they are necessary.
Ideally the glasses prescription should be brought to the examination.
The D4 examination is needed:
- On application for a lorry or bus provisional licence (submitted with the D2).
- Every 5 years from age 45
- Annually from age 65.
The same examination applies to PSV drivers as for HGV.
