Sleep apnoea and your HGV licence: home testing

Last updated: 6 November 2026

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) can cause excessive daytime sleepiness, which is dangerous at the wheel. If you or your partner have concerns, such as loud snoring, pauses in breathing at night or feeling very sleepy during the day, see your GP. A home sleep test can help you prepare for that conversation.

What the DVLA rules say

GOV.UK's guidance for medical professionals says sleep study results are measured on the apnoea-hypopnoea index (AHI), or an equivalent test. For Group 2 (lorry and bus) drivers:

SituationDVLA rule (Group 2)
Excessive sleepiness from suspected OSA, or mild OSA (AHI below 15)Must not drive. Driving may resume only after satisfactory symptom control. If that cannot be achieved within 3 months, DVLA must be notified.
Excessive sleepiness from moderate (AHI 15–29) or severe (AHI 30+) OSAMust not drive and must notify DVLA. Relicensing needs control of the condition, improved sleepiness and treatment adherence, with medical confirmation and at least an annual review.

Drivers can also check the public page Excessive sleepiness and driving. Bus, coach or lorry drivers use form SL1V. GOV.UK says you can be fined up to £1,000 if you do not tell DVLA about a medical condition that affects your driving. DVLA's leaflet INF159, Tiredness can kill, is written for drivers worried about sleepiness.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to tell DVLA about sleep apnoea?

Group 2 drivers with excessive sleepiness from moderate or severe OSA (AHI 15 or more) must stop driving and notify DVLA. With suspected or mild OSA causing sleepiness you must not drive until symptoms are controlled, and must notify DVLA if that takes more than 3 months.

Can I drive an HGV with sleep apnoea?

Relicensing is possible when the condition is controlled, sleepiness has improved and you keep up treatment, with medical confirmation and at least an annual review for Group 2 licences.

How much is a home sleep apnoea test in the UK?

Providers listed here charged £179 to £189 for a one-night home test when checked in November 2026, or more with a consultation. Prices change; check the provider.

Does a home test replace seeing my GP?

No. See your GP about symptoms. A home test can help you prepare, but your GP or a specialist will advise on diagnosis and treatment.
