The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) is the professional qualification you need if driving an HGV, bus or coach is the main part of your job.
Initial qualification
New drivers take the CPC tests: part 1 (theory and hazard perception), part 2 (case studies), part 3 (off-road exercises and on-road driving) and part 4 (practical demonstration). If you're on an approved National Vocational Training (NVT) course, you can drive professionally for up to 12 months without parts 2 and 4.
Periodic training: 35 hours every 5 years
To stay qualified, you must take 35 hours of Driver CPC training every 5 years. This is often done as five 7-hour courses through approved training centres.
Exemptions
You might not need the full CPC if you drive for non-commercial personal use, only drive for certain tasks such as taking a vehicle to a test centre, or driving is not the main part of your job. The same applies if the vehicle is limited to 28mph or is used by services such as the armed forces or police. Check exemptions on GOV.UK.
Don't forget your medical
CPC training is separate from licence renewal. Lorry and bus licences are renewed every 5 years. From age 45 each renewal needs a D4 medical, and from 65 you renew every year with a medical.
